An evening with Nicola Cappellari | 'Marea' Book Signing & Talk

French version follows [EN] After a few months away, we’re very happy to open our doors again and get together for our first event of the fall. And we couldn’t think of a better way to start! On Thursday September 17, we’ll welcome Italian photographer Nicola Cappellari to The Analog Club for an evening around his book Marea, published by Penisola Edizioni. Nicola is travelling from Italy to Paris especially for the occasion, and we’re particularly excited that the evening will go beyond a book signing. He’ll present his photographic work, talk about his approach to analog photography and reflect on his return to film and the importance of what he calls “waiting time”: the space that opens up when you take a photograph without immediately being able to see it. Marea grew from this way of working. In the lake landscapes of the Veneto region, Nicola found places where time seems to move differently, shaped by the slow rhythm of the tide and the constant movement between arrival and retreat. The book follows that rhythm in its very form. Printed as a leporello, it expands and contracts as you move through it, while scans of Nicola’s original silver gelatin prints are accompanied by a sentimental geography of words, printed in letterpress with vintage type. We’re really looking forward to hearing Nicola speak about the work, seeing the book together, and, after the summer break, having the chance to gather again at the club. Jeudi 17 septembre, nous aurons le plaisir d’accueillir le photographe italien Nicola Cappellari à The Analog Club pour une soirée autour de son livre Marea, publié par Penisola Edizioni. Nicola se déplace spécialement depuis l’Italie pour l’occasion, et nous sommes contents que cette rencontre aille au-delà d’une simple séance de dédicace. Il présentera son travail photographique, parlera de son approche de la photographie et reviendra sur son choix de se remettre à l'argentique, ainsi que sur l’importance de ce qu’il appelle le « temps d’attente » : cet espace qui s’ouvre lorsque l’on prend une photographie sans pouvoir immédiatement voir le résultat. Marea est née de cette manière de travailler. Dans les paysages lacustres de la Vénétie, Nicola a trouvé des lieux où le temps semble s’écouler autrement, rythmé par le mouvement lent des marées et leur va-et-vient constant entre flux et reflux. Le livre reprend ce mouvement jusque dans sa forme. Conçu comme un leporello, il se déploie et se replie au fil des pages, tandis que les reproductions des tirages originaux en gélatino-argentique de Nicola sont accompagnées d’une géographie sentimentale de mots, imprimés en typographie avec des caractères anciens. Nous avons hâte d’entendre Nicola parler de son travail, de découvrir Marea ensemble et, après cette pause estivale, de pouvoir enfin nous retrouver à nouveau au club.
