Who Owns A Good Idea?

This is not an AI talk. It's a talk about who owns an idea; the rules nobody quite agreed on, now being tested by a technology nobody designed them for. Niels Langereis has spent over twenty years at the senior end of marketing: CEO and managing director of multiple agencies, and over six years at WPP, where he ran a creative production company called Hogarth and was global client MD for Philips. He has watched the credit and the liability of AI-assisted work get distributed in ways that don't quite add up. These are not new questions. In 1735, William Hogarth lobbied Parliament for the world's first visual copyright law. In 2023, the US Supreme Court ruled against Andy Warhol, not because he'd changed too little, but because the changed work served the same commercial purpose as the original. Three hundred years of the same argument, still unresolved. Generative AI didn't create this problem. It just made it everyone's problem at once. What percentage of an idea needs to be yours for it to be original? Is there a number? And if there isn't — what are we all quietly agreeing to pretend? That's what we're talking about.
